I veered from our normal walk the other day.... several reasons. There's a dead cow out there right now and the dogs are drawn to it like flies to .... whatever. It is hard to keep them away. Our favorite winter walk is now snake heaven so we have to go up higher. We stumbled on this...
Just above our normal walking area and securely fenced off but happily including walk-through gates.
It is beautifully green right now and the creek is full of water. If it were any warmer this place would be swarming with mosquitoes but for now, in this unusually cool spring, it is very pleasant.
Don't you just love these strange photos that pop up of your animals? I had no idea she was running through the water with her tonque out but here it is - proof. So goofy.
I thought this was a wild plant but now I've found out that this used to be a ranch and I think it is a garden escapee. It is a rose, I'm certain, but the blooms are larger than the wild roses, white, and super-fragrant.
I want some of this in my own garden.
I wish typepad included a way for you to smell this. Gorgeous.
It is spring and the Owens Valley is in full glory. Every day there is something new blooming and something to stop you in your tracks. This is the season.
The grass is high, the mountains still have a LOT of snow...
Remnants of that old ranch make for great photos. Love these aged fences and love imagining the activity of this rustic place. All the buildings are long gone, but the corrals, the old scale, the chutes are all still standing.
Makes me think of another time - nostalgia for a time when people were not so bombarded with information and stimulation. When it was more about earth and flesh and sky.
That's why we walk, right?

Nice! It does look like a rose! Another fragrant white flower I just thought of is Philadelphus - Mock Orange, which is blooming now, but your plant looks very rose-y: 5 petals (in their natural state), many stamens, and those leaves are just like other rosebushes. It might be a nice one to try to transplant some of, or, can you graft roses? I am not a gardener, so I have no idea, but it's a pretty one!
